Online counseling FAQs

What’s the best online therapy service?
There’s no single best type of counseling for everyone. Instead, the best type of online counseling is the one that works the most effectively for you, whether that is behavior therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT), exposure therapy (ERP), couples therapy, teen counseling or another type of psychotherapy.
Adherence is important if you want to make a change in your life. It’s best to choose a form of online counseling or support that’s a good match for your needs, budget and lifestyle, as this can help you to stay involved and adhere to the advice you’ll receive.
What can I talk to my online counselor about?
Whether you have a specific topic you’d like to discuss or you are looking to get some thoughts off of your chest, our licensed counselors are here for you. Some common discussion points include:
  • Relationship issues
  • Symptoms of mental illness, such as anxious thoughts or low mood
  • Substance abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Behavioral health
  • General well-being
All video chat sessions are confidential, so you can trust your professional counselor with whatever is on your mind during your real-time live video sessions.
What happens if I don’t like my counselor?
It’s quite common to feel strongly towards your counselor. You may be amazed at how well your counselor understands you and works with you to overcome challenges, or you might think that your counselor just isn’t a good match for you.
We know how important it is to have a counselor that you click with. To make this easier, we allow you to filter online therapists based on a range of attributes, helping you find someone who’s a good match for you.
After you fill out our initial questionnaire, we will work to match you with a licensed therapist that matches your needs and preferences. If for any reason you feel that a change of counselor would help, reach out to us and we'll share steps to transfer.
How long does online counseling take to produce results?
The amount of time required for counseling to produce real, noticeable benefits isn’t the same for everyone. Some conditions may require longer and more comprehensive live sessions than others in order for you to experience improvements. For example, one person might be working through a very specific issue like burnout, while another might be trying to regain their self-esteem while unpacking a lifetime of trauma. These two mental health concerns will likely have very different timelines to improvement.
Depending on your condition, needs and other factors, you may notice improvements after just a few therapy sessions, or experience slower, more gradual improvements over the course of several months.
For example, for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), research shows that 50% of patients recover as indicated by self-reported s symptom measures after 15 to 20 sessions of therapy.
There’s no exact amount of time that counseling will take to work for you. By working closely with your counselor, you’ll be able to work together towards achieving your therapy objectives over time.
Do I need health insurance to get online counseling?
Short answer: no. One advantage of our telemedicine counseling services is that you pay a fixed rate, no matter your health insurance coverage. In fact, you may find that our online therapy platform is more affordable than face to face therapy or other forms of traditional therapy, even if you do have health insurance. Thanks to the low cost of telehealth, it’s a great option if you want to talk to a licensed psychotherapist but don’t have an insurance provider that includes coverage for in-person therapy.
